On August 6, 2011, a U.S. CH-47 Chinook helicopter, call sign Extortion 17, was shot down by a rocket-propelled grenade in the Tangi Valley, Afghanistan. The helicopter was carrying a Quick Reaction Force attempting to reinforce a Joint Special Operations Command unit. All 38 people on board, including 30 American servicemen and a military dog, were killed. The incident remains the largest single loss of life for Naval Special Warfare during the Afghan War.

Memorial Day is a solemn occasion to honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the military. It’s a time for reflection, gratitude, and paying tribute to those who gave their lives in defense of our freedom. As we gather with family and friends, let us take a moment to pause and honor the sacrifices of our fallen heroes, ensuring that their legacy of courage and selflessness is never forgotten.
